Hydroponics enables gardeners to grow crops indoors, year-round. In hydroponics, fertilizer is a must because crops growing in water can’t get the nutrients they need any other way. In traditional gardening, the soil itself and supplemental fertilizer provide nutrients to plants - though using fertilizer can be unnecessary if you have really great soil.
